This week the Art Club finished their coil bowls. To take a twist on the age old coil pot, I decided using this essential clay building technique to create an entire bowl rather than just a bowl. The students had an interesting time at first trying to get the hang of creating the "perfect" coil. We followed some rules such as if you picked your coil up and it rips, you need to start over. Also scoring with slip (clay glue) is important for the bowls so they don't crack during the drying period. Most importantly, we talked about the correct thickness of coils - too thin will crack, too thick won't dry properly.
