Our 8th and 7th graders defined art in a discussion this morning. This video was our inspiration before we continued with our projects. Feel free to watch this at home and have a discussion with the people in your household on art!

The first graders ventured into printmaking. We explored how a simple shape can be repeated with through an overlapping pattern. Our essential question... How can you make an overlapping pattern? We used the technique of "printing". In this case, we used used simple circular shaped objects...but as we will progress throughout the years we could end up with prints like these 8th graders. Check out their Mandala prints! This week the Art Club finished their coil bowls. To take a twist on the age old coil pot, I decided using this essential clay building technique to create an entire bowl rather than just a bowl. The students had an interesting time at first trying to get the hang of creating the "perfect" coil. We followed some rules such as if you picked your coil up and it rips, you need to start over. Also scoring with slip (clay glue) is important for the bowls so they don't crack during the drying period. Most importantly, we talked about the correct thickness of coils - too thin will crack, too thick won't dry properly. 2nd Grade learned about the great Monarch butterfly - the "King" of all butterflies. Monarch butterflies are not able to survive the cold winters of most of the United States so they migrate south and west each autumn to escape the cold weather. The monarch migration usually starts in about October of each year, but they start their return trip in March.
The third graders have been hard at work! The first week was a blast painting abstract designs with texture (forks and scrapers, etc.) to create their warm and cool colored paper. The next two weeks were spent learning about the different cultures around the world that practice weaving with a loom such as Ghana, Africa and Peru, South America. We imagined our paper was the loom, with the strands of fabric being weaved through. "Over, Under, Over, Under..." was said quite a few times to remember which pattern to weave. They did a fantastic job! |
